As Exercise to Music (ETM) instructor you can work in fitness centres and health clubs, community centres, church halls, schools - in fact just about anywhere you wish!
 
A majority of ETM instructors work freelance or as part of the Group Fitt brand.
 
As an ETM instructor you can deliver many classes per week, as a full time job or as a freelance instructor. Many students with ETM go on to become studio coordinators as the heart of a fitness centre. If you love exercising to music, then you will love the ETM course.

  • understand how to collect participant information
  • understand how to use participant information to plan group exercise to music
  • Work to the beat, phrase and/or rhythm of a variety of music styles
  • understand how to plan group exercise to music
  • understand how to use music to enhance group exercise
  • Design free-style choreography to suit your class
  • Demonstrate good personal technique and form when teaching a session
  • Apply basic skills that will enable you to include older adult, disabled, and antenatal and post-natal client groups in your sessions
In the context of ETM:
 
Some experience of group exercise to music (aerobics) is highly recommended.
 
General requirements
 
The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential, therefore a degree of physical fitness is necessary. There is also an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved, and candidates should have basic skills in communication pitched at Level 2.
 
Qualification structure
  • Unit 1 – Exercise and Fitness Knowledge Level 2 (J/500/5915 )
  • Unit 2 – Health, Safety and Professionalism in Exercise and Fitness Instruction (R/500/5917)
  • Unit 3 – Instructing Gym (T/500/7529) or
  • Instructing Group Exercise to Music (L/500/5916).
Assessment
Internally assessed:
  • Portfolio of evidence to include:
  • Risk assessment safety planning document
  • Par-Q Screening
  • Session plan
  • Session evaluation
  • Direct observation of candidate instructing a gym session or group exercise to music session
  • Standardised worksheet
Externally assessed:

 

105 minute theory paper consisting of fifty multiple choice questions

Face to face (Full time) – Monday to Friday (week 1)

Monday to Friday (week 2)

Face to face (Part time) – Saturday to Sunday (week 10)

Blended Learning - Home study (appox 40 hours)

                             - 5 days face to face (full time or part time)
